DWG to FBX conversion
Convert a DWG file to FBX with a supported workflow
AutoCAD 2019 and later no longer export FBX directly. Use Navisworks or 3ds Max to read the DWG, inspect the converted geometry and create the FBX delivery file before importing it into DevXR.
DevXR does not upload or convert DWG files. The supported handoff is a private FBX below the project limit; DevXR then converts that FBX to a validated GLB for the browser.
The workflow in 4 steps
- 01
Check what the DWG actually contains
Open the source in its CAD application. Confirm that useful 3D solids, surfaces or meshes exist, then record the units, origin, attached xrefs and required layers.
- 02
Open or append it in Navisworks
Load the DWG and verify that the expected objects are visible. Install the appropriate Object Enabler when a Plant 3D, Architecture or other vertical-product object appears only as a proxy.
- 03
Export a controlled FBX
Use Output, Export Scene, then FBX. Select the target units, include textures only when needed and use the polygon limit carefully so important detail is not discarded.
- 04
Import and inspect in DevXR
Upload the FBX from a verified Studio account. After conversion, check scale, orientation, missing geometry, materials and framing before publishing the validated GLB.
FBX delivery file
Use a real DWG importer instead of renaming the extension
Autodesk documents two current routes: append the DWG in Navisworks and use Output > Export Scene > FBX, or import the drawing into 3ds Max and export FBX. A 2D drawing remains lines and splines; conversion does not invent walls, thickness or a usable 3D mesh. Vertical-product proxy objects may require the matching Autodesk Object Enabler.
Before you import
- Do not look for
FBXEXPORTin AutoCAD 2019 or later: Autodesk removed it. - Make sure the DWG contains actual 3D geometry; a 2D plan does not automatically become a 3D model.
- Resolve required xrefs and proxy objects before export, and exclude unrelated layers.
- Confirm units and model extents before and after conversion.
- Keep the resulting
.fbxbelow 100 MB and review every useful object in DevXR.
Frequently asked questions
Can current AutoCAD export a DWG directly to FBX?
No. Autodesk removed FBX import and export starting with AutoCAD 2019. Its current support guidance recommends using Navisworks, 3ds Max or another product that can read DWG and export FBX.
Can I rename `.dwg` to `.fbx`?
No. An extension rename does not translate CAD entities, solids, units or materials. A compatible application must parse and convert the file.
Is there a reliable free conversion for every DWG?
No universal free workflow preserves every modern DWG object. For a commercial project, use a licensed tool available to the file author or ask that author to deliver FBX or GLB. Avoid uploading confidential drawings to an unreviewed online converter.
Can DevXR import the original DWG?
No. DevXR Studio currently accepts GLB and FBX only. The DWG remains in your CAD workflow and is never sent to DevXR.
Why is the exported file flat or incomplete?
The source may contain only 2D entities, excluded layers, unresolved xrefs or unsupported proxy objects. Restore the missing source data or model the required volume before exporting again.
